He was the first to introduce tests to test students' general knowledge. However, the first country to adopt the concept of exams and introduce it on a large scale was China. China conducted the world's first exam called The Imperial Examination.
China's Imperial Examination was used to select eligible candidates to serve as government officers. England then introduced civil service examinations in 1806. By the end of the 19th century, the examination became a standard procedure at universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.
Since the East India Company came to India, it started examinations for recruiting civil servants in 1853. These examinations were held in London, in which the candidates had to meet physical and mental criteria. Later, the British government formed the Public Service Commission to conduct the examinations in a systematic manner.
