Why do we write 'K' to show thousand? You must have written it too, but you might not know the interesting reason behind it...

Usually 'M' is used for million, 'B' is used for billion. In such a case, the letter for thousand should be T but it is represented by 'K'. Why is it so?

Actually many western countries were greatly influenced by Greek and Roman culture. The use of the letter 'K' for thousand also comes from Roman culture. 'CHILLOI' in Greek means thousand. This word came from there. Apart from this, the word K has also been used for thousand in the Bible.

The French shortened the Greek word CHILLOI to kilo. This was followed by kilometer, kilogram, etc. Since a kilogram contains 1000 grams, the thousand sign became K.

Thus, the symbol for 'kilo' is 'K'. Also, 'M' for million, 'B' for billion, 'T' for trillion, so we do not use the letter 'T' for thousand but start representing it with K.
